Catcher in the Rye Week 1

I'm kind of wondering so many people have like turned to serial killers after reading this book. From what i can tell it isn't that bad of a book so far. I agree with Mr. Kunkle that it is a little hard to like this Holden guy but I think he has an inside view on life that most people don't have. I like how this book is a fairly easy read because of all the dialog. One character I haven't been able to get a read on yet is Holden's roommate. I'm not sure if he is a good guy that I can like or if he is a creep that is full of himself. There has to be a reason that Ackley doesnt' like him. Please leave your comments on Holden's roommate for me.

  1. I definitely think that Stradlater is just a jerk who has been full of himself for quite some time. After reading the second section he is obviously a player (at least from the way Holden tells it) and is in love with the way he looks (taking half and hour to comb his hair is pretty ridiculous). And it seems that he is very proud of his sexual conquests, and the number of them. However after reading this far, I don't think that Holden is a reliable source to judge the people around him off of because he will say something positive about someone one paragraph and the complete opposite the next paragraph. So, honestly, his roommate could be a good guy, I guess, and Holden just has a skewed perception (though I doubt his perception could be that skewed).

  2. Kerry, I completely agree. It doesn't even take you a half and hour to comb your hair and it's still lucious. I also agree with the fact that Holden isn't the most reliable source. We knew from the very beginning that he was a liar and from then on it's been difficult to figure out what he was and wasnt lying about. Hopefully further on we will find out who the true Holden is... but probably not.

  3. Thanks for the input guys I would say though that Holden remeinds me a little of Rico, Quaz, and Shaddow mixed. Let me know what you think

  4. I think Stradlater is a good guy. Peronally I have to disagree with you about Holden. I believe he tells the story to make himself look like he has an inside view of the world, but he really doesn't. He tries to make it seem like he gets how everything works and why poeple act the way they do, but then he contradicts everything he says. He always says that something really annoys him, but then he unknowingly does the exact same thing to somebody else. He is not the level headed guy he tries to appear to be. He is actually extremely insecure and dangerous.

  5. ok the whole serial killer thing i agree and disagree with. one hand holden's point of view is very cynical he is always mad and depressed and thinks everything thing and everyone is stupid or pointless or both. and you guys are being over critical there is nothin wrong with stradlater.. hes just a normal guy trying to get with girls. no harm in that. "dont hate the player hate the game" as dpat would always say. and holden was asking to get his ass kicked by swingin at stradlater first and then still running his mouth and instigating even when he was on the ground.. holden is lucky stradlater didnt kill him.

  6. I agree, Brian. He is totally insecure and it's interesting to read about that because people, like Holden, who are insecure try so hard to cover it up with rude sarcasm or unnecessary actions, but while they're doing all of that they make it even more obvious. Rico5k... all I have to say to you is they are not normal. Far from it.
